FAQs
How long will the therapy last?
Every couple or individual is different and presents with a different set of needs and problems, so it is difficult to say. The therapy is not confined to a limited number of sessions and may last weeks or even months. Ideally the therapy ends by mutual agreement when everyone agrees that the work is either completed or has, in the opinion of all the parties, achieved as much as it can.
How often do the sessions take place and how long is each session?
Initially we will meet for a preliminary session to find out why you have decided to seek help and what you hope to achieve through the process. If you decide to proceed then we will agree a regular day and time each week and this slot will be reserved for you. Each session lasts 50 minutes.
Will we have homework?
Where the focus is on the relationship issues, homework is not given.
In psychosexual therapy, if you are undergoing a behavioural ‘sensate focus’ programme, you will be given a set of carefully graded exercises for you and your partner to do at home between sessions.
A ‘sensate focus’ programme is a series of exercises specifically tailored to fit the needs of each individual couple, enabling them to rebuild their sexual relationship by helping them to reconnect in a safe, loving and non-demanding way with an initial focus on sensuality and not sexuality.
Who is relationship and psychosexual therapy for?
Everyone. I see couples and individuals, irrespective of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Can I come for therapy on my own?
Individuals are welcome to come if they have relationship issues to discuss. However, if you are part of a couple, it is preferable if both partners come to the sessions together and I encourage this unless there are good reasons why this might not be appropriate.
